Canal quarter · towpath-side streets

This route passes a waterside service spur before the museum branch. Its purpose is to practise interpreting directions and junction layouts in sequence, not to reward memorising a route. Check what each sign applies to, then make a fresh observation before acting on it.

Canal-side and residential streets may bring pedestrians, cyclists and limited views close to the carriageway. Keep enough time and space to respond, and follow your instructor’s guidance on real roads. If the route becomes uncertain, prioritise a safe position and continue to a suitable place to plan again.

What to practise

  • Read a route instruction and match it to the next visible junction.
  • Check for people and cyclists near waterside paths and side roads.
  • Avoid a rushed turn when a sign or access road is unclear.

Read the Highway Code

Use the current official guidance alongside qualified instruction.

Highway Code rules 159–203: using the road

This introduction and the interactive scene are learning aids, not a driving test or evidence that you are ready to drive on a real road. Practise with a qualified instructor and follow the Highway Code.
